23 NOV 05: TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIERS

Very interesting....and worth passing along.

On Jeopardy the other night, the final question was How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns ------ All three missed it.

This is really an awesome sight to watch if you've never had the chance . Very fascinating.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

1. How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the
tomb of the Unknowns and why?

21 steps. It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute, which is the
highest honor given any military or foreign dignitary.

2. How long does he hesitate after his about face to begin his
return walk and why?

21 seconds for the same reason as answer number 1

3. Why are his gloves wet?

His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his grip on the
rifle.

4. Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time
and if not, why not?

He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb.
After his march across the path, he executes an about face
and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder.

5. How often are the guards changed?

Guards are changed every thirty minutes,
twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.

6. What are the physical traits of the guard limited to?

For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he must be
between 5' 10" and 6' 2" tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30." Other
requirements of the Guard: They must commit 2 years of life to guard the
tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot drink any alcohol on
or off duty for the rest of their lives. They cannot swear in public for the
rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the uniform {fighting} or the tomb in
any way. After two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on their lapel signifying they served as guard of the tomb. There are only
400 presently worn. The guard must obey these rules for the rest of their
lives or give up the wreath pin.

The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat
and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the
top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as they come to a halt.
There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards dress for duty
in front of a full-length mirror.

The first six months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone, nor
watch TV. All off duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid
to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. A guard must memorize who they are
and where they are interred. Among the notables are: President Taft, Joe
E. Lewis {the boxer} and Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy, {the most
decorated soldier of WWII} of Hollywood fame.

Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for
guard duty.

ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.

In 2003 as Hurricane Isabelle was approaching Washington, DC, our
US Senate/House took 2 days off with anticipation of the storm. On the ABC
evening news, it was reported that because of the dangers from the
hurricane, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of
the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment. They
respectfully declined the offer, "No way, Sir!" Soaked to the skin,
marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding
the Tomb was not just an assignment, it was the highest honor that can be
afforded to a serviceperson. The tomb has been patrolled continuously,
24/7, since 1930.

God Bless and keep them.

22 NOV 05: JUDICIAL FILIBUSTERS! ABUSE OF POWER

Okay here is another prime example of my elected officials not doing their job; which they just supposedly gave themselves a raise for. Even if it was just a per diem raise.

Okay so when the founders thought up the courts and all that we call government they came up with this idea where the committee looks at the judicial nominees and then votes for the nominee to go to a vote on the whole floor or to not let them go to the floor. Well if you vote no to let a guy go to the floor for a vote then his chances of ending up a judge is like nil.

Then later our founders came up with cool idea to stop people from spending money on stupid things; money that does not belong to the government but to the people. Like bridges to no where and government endowments to find out what the consistency of ketchup. Stuff like that which is a total waste of tax money. Basically a filibuster is if you could run your mouth long enough you could prevent a vote on a bill. If you could do it long enough you might be able to stop the bill all together. Great idea when dealing with spending and other do nothing laws. Bad when it comes to Judges. Tax dollars are not for creating programs to make Americans life support dependent on the government. That is called Socialsim; USSR tried it failed. Quit buying votes and lets do some good. And that goes for the appeaser party and the supposed fiscal conservative party.

Well the founders never thought about a filibuster in a committee to vote on a judge being sent to the floor for a vote of approval or disapproval. That is because up tell the whiners/appeasers lost control of the congress no one had done it before. Now they realize that the only way to get any legislation passed is to get radical judges who want to make laws from the bench. There is a concept the founders never thought of. I am sure jefferson is rolling over in his grave screaming about just interpreting the law. Well filibusters in committee are worse than an up or down vote. Because nothing happens. Congress has that down already. Doing nothing that is. Oh wait they did vote not to do a whole sale pull out of Iraq. So there is at least one good thing.

If you filibuster an appointee then it never gets voted yes or no to go to the floor. It stays in committee where everything comes to die. Similar to purgatory. This just leaves an empty judge seat out there. Well that is not what the founders intended. Stop the madness! Give them the up or down vote! If you can't then vote the appeasers out of office so we can get some work done. Seriously you are still getting paid your full salary for basically making the judicial branch work like crap. Good Job! The founding fathers I am sure are so proud. Also doing away with all filibusters is not the answer either. That think keeps alot of pork from becoming law. Or well it used to up unitl the last I don't know 14 years.

you know why the appeasers are losing control of the government? Gee, let me think a second. Uh! Could it be they have lost touch with the American people? I will tell you that you would be hard pressed to find a soldier here in Iraq that wants to abandon the mission.

Oh wait! I know!I know! It is because all the appeasers do is whine. Has anybody heard them suggest a solution to any of the problems that we are going through? Oh wait they did suggest withdrawl. Hey! Making the government bigger is not a solution. Trust me! Don't' believe me ask imperial China, The Roman Empire. The civilizations started to fall when the government was at its largest. See proof that bureaucrats do suck the life out of you! Read about imperial chian and their corrupt bureaucrats. But I digress back to my point.

But if you ask us if we want to go home. We will all says yes but that does not mean we want to quit. So if you are polling don't ask if we want to go home and then use that as the reason to pull out. Everybody who is away from home wants to go home. DUH!!!

Okay other stuff you did not see on the news. The Pres in Mongolia. Cause some of you don't know those Mongolian guys can fight. A couple of them shot a suicide bomber in his vehicle on a collision course with the mess tent. Mongolian Marksmanship + terrorist = dead terrorist and a lot of lives saved in Iraq. So we gave Mongolia 11 million to help get there democracy on their feet. I am cool with that one because those guys are earning it that money with their blood fighting for democracy and freedom something they had only 15 years.

I just think we should take what ever aid money we are sending to Germany and France and give it the Mongolians, and the Polish, Romanians, any of those guys that are fighting with us. Basically you fight with me in my time of need I won't let you down.

Now if I could just get the government to quit taxing everything so much. So small businesses could create some wealth in this country.

Ever wonder why U.S. corps have home offices in the Cayman isles. Well simple. If you are a foreign company you only pay taxes on what you sell in your country not foriegn countries. That seems fair right. Now check this out. If you are an American company based in the U.S. you pay taxes not just on what you sell in the U.S. but also on all the money that you make in rest of the world. Wow that sucks. You get to pay taxes to the country you are selling in and by your home country. That makes me want to get out there and make my buisness' profit margins bigger. Nice. That is almost Double jeopardy.

OH yeah. I want to scream about how silly some people are being over the price of gas. We don't have an oil problem. We have a refining problem. Don't believe me look up on google see when the last time an oil refinery was built in the U.S.

See this goes to show you people don't understand supply and demand. For example, Part of the reason good diamonds are so expensive is because there aren't that many of them. Well if you can't make a lot of something and a lot of people want it then price goes up. If you want lower gas find a way to make Oil into gas on a larger scale. Hello, I got this in JR high. What happend to the rest of my country. Maybe school house rock should have done something on economics.

Please people think a little bit. Cause god knows the media does not even take time to see if the story is true before they run it.

Sure glad we did not have the revolutionary war with this current media landscape.
could you imagine the headlines.

21 NOV 05: Truth about Flag draped Coffins

Hope you take the time to understand what the flag draped coffin really means. Here is how to understand the flag that laid upon it and is surrendered to so many widows.

Do you know that at military funerals, the 21-gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in the year 1776?

Have you ever noticed the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the United States of America Flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day!

The 1st fold of the flag is a symbol of life.
!
The 2nd fold is a symbol of the belief in eternal life.

The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing the ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of the country to attain peace throughout the world.

The 4th fold represents the weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance.

The 5th fold is a tribute to the country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong.

The 6th fold is for where people's hearts lie. It is with their heart that They pledge allegiance to the flag of the United! States Of America, and the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

The 7th fold is a tribute to its Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that they protect their country and their flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of their republic.

The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day.

The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers. For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.

The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of their country since they were first born.

The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.

!

The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding them of their nations motto, "In God We Trust."

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for them the rights, privileges and freedoms they enjoy today.

There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning. In the future, you'll see flags folded and now you will know why.

Share this with the children you love and all others who love what is referred to, the symbol of "Liberty and Freedom"

MAYBE THE SUPREME COURT SHOULD READ THIS EXPLANATION BEFORE THEY RENDER THEIR DECISION ON THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE.

20 NOV 05: BAD CONGRESS! BAD! BAD!

Wow my Tax dollars at work! again!!!

Well it is bad enough that the government has been getting larger at a rate then I can remember in the last two decades. And yes I followed politics at eleven!

Well last week Congress voted to give themselves a pay raise. I am willing to bet it is was not just the republicans who voted yes on that one. But here is my gripe. Me and the boys here in Iraq and Afghanistan did not get one. Sure we get a COLA most Jan's but even getting that passed is like pulling teeth on an unsedated crocodile. I keep hearing that the deficit is out of control. Well hey fella's take one for the team and vote not to give yourself a raise! Most of you don't deserve it! How do I know! See my last politically charged Blog. There are elected officials that don't know what posse comitatitus is and officials that don't seem to understand that the supreme court and the courts in general are not a legislative body. Remember elementry school? three branches of government: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.

Also, if you are gonna give yourselves a pay raise and then take a long weekend. Do you think maybe you could do something good like make it so the armed forces doesn't have to pay any taxes state or fed? I mean honestly you are taking a long weekend while we are spilling our Blood for a great and noble cause. But there are kids out here that have not gotten four day pass since they have been here.

Or better yet how about a flat tax or a national sales tax? That should boost the economy nicely.

Also while I am ranting I keep reading all this crap about how the Republicans voted to cut social programs by 700 million dollars. HAH! Okay I am throwing the B.S. Flag on that! Congress nor the republicans have voted to cut jack since 2000. What they did do was put a cap on the spending projected for next year. Meaning that next year we are not Adding 700 million to social programs. But that is not cutting spending. Cutting is like this.

National budget 2005 is 5 trillion. National budget for 2006 3.5 trillion.
That is cutting! Just in case some of you are confused. What the congress did with these so called cuts was this:

National budget 2005 is 5 trillion, we were supposed to add .5 trillion next year but instead we will put in some caps and only increase .25 trillion. So national budget 2006 is 5.25 trillion.

Cutting spending I think not.

Bad Congress! Bad!

Also Do you think we can all pull together and agree that the bad guys over here need to be killed or thrown in jail.

Hey if you are a Senator or a REP for a state and you stand up and ask for a withdrawal. You should look and see how it effects suicide bombings. Everytime one of you spineless weasels who have for gotten that "Freedom is our greatest Export" stands up and says something that stupid we get more Suicide bombers over here. Don't believe me two days ago some Sen said that I won't mention which party he was with but he is an appeaser. Always good to appease the local bully. Hell I learned that in elementary school. Not!! But the last two days get on the web and see how many people died over here due to suicide bombers. Coincidence! I think not!

Hey media! every time you run that story; I don't know like every 15 mins, you are getting innocent people in Iraq and the Stan blown up. Thanks for helping. But with that kind of help who really needs enemies. Honestly! Not to mention my buddies that are swearing an oath to protect your sorry butt. So you can believe a lying marine SSG who is trying to get famous by making up war crimes. Without even checking the facts. I understand there is no such thing as journalistic integrity anymore but jeez you can at least check to see if the guys is a liar or not? Hello no wonder everyone is watching fox news. They at least check some of their stories.

Media I got news for you. The vast majority of us don't like killing people who are just trying to go to work. Contrary to your belief we are not maniacs with guns. I have heard accounts of units over here not returning fire because the bad guys were using little kids as Shields. But hey were just a bunch of baby killers. Right!!

This is not Vietnam! Not that I believe that this stuff really happened on the whole sale level in Vietnam like the media said it did back then. I know to many Vietnam vets. I know to many great Americans. Last I checked we are pretty much peace loving people but if you start a fight with us you will pay for it.

If you are reading this and you want to do something about it write your local TV station and maybe a few national ones and ask them to do a story on the kids going to school in Iraq. Ask them how much power there is in the country of Iraq. Ask them about economic recovery. Those are stories worth watching also. Here is a story idea for you guys since you can't think them up on your own. Women voting in Iraq. Hello it is as big a deal here as it was in the US when it happened. Were are the feminsts at now. Oh wait! your only a feminist if you hate George Bush and are agains tthe war. I thought the purpose of Feminism was equailty for Women. Not just liberal women. So hey how about getting the media to cover some of the equaility gains by the Iraqi women. Do something besides Nag and Bitch about problems. In fact be part of the solution instead of the endless noise THAT IS REALLY THE PROBLEM!!!!!!

This is a time to quit being so passive. Sure all of us guys over here love the letters and the boxes you send. But how about some of you get together and start fighting the media or start sending money to some media groups who are putting out the good stuff we are doing over here in Iraq and Afghanistan. Start throwing your own B.S. flags at the media!! Be part of the Solution. Don't be a bench warmer!

CONGRESS! GET A SPINE! TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM! Bush be a man veto the Darn pay raise! I am sure there was some other wasted spending in the bill any way.

God knows there is a bunch of us out here taking plenty for the congress. I think they should not be allowed a pay raise until the all know the bill of rights, the preamble, and what posse comitatius is and what it was created. That sould take about 10 years.

17 NOV 05: What's on a soldiers mind

Those of you who know me would probably say not much. But those who know me really well know that the depth of who I am will often catch you off guard.

So in an effort to help people in this country understand what it is like to be here I am going to attempt to tell you some things you don't know. Hopefully never have to worry about.

WHAT IS ON A SOLDIERS MIND AS HIS TOUR IN A WAR ZONE IS COMING TO A CLOSE.

Most of the time over here people will notice that you have become a different person. One of the biggest reasons has to do with your mind. In case you forgot your mind plays tricks on you. An off hand comment from a family member or loved one has an affect. You may have been joking when you said it; In fact, you may be pretty sure that your soldier took it as a joke at the time.

But time is the enemy here.

Think about all the distractors you have back home, your phone, T.V., stores, movies, malls, fun, anything you can think of. So if you remove all the distractors you have what all those above things take up. TIME! The one thing you are losing and you won't get back. That has an effect.

Your soldier will replay the conversation over and over again and analyze it probably to a point where Interpol could not make sense out of it anymore. But hey you don't get as frequent contact with home so we dwell on the last contact sometimes for our detriment. Then we project our insecurities into that over analyzed last contanct and then it all becomes something that it is not and was probably never meant to. That has an effect.

Now add the little things like being away from home for the holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, births of family members and deaths also. yeah you feel guilty because you want to be there for you real family but the military one needs you more now. This is especially hard if you have never missed any of these before. That guilt combined with the loneliness gets to you. It changes you. It strips your of your securities and most times leaves behind insecurities. That has an effect.

You make friends over here. Because your lonely and no one person is an island and people need human contact. Those friendships have varying effects on your loved ones back home. I imagine your loved ones back home feel guilty because they can't be there for you and that they are not involved or they feel left out or afraid you will leave them out or not need them when you get back because of these new friendships. That creates problems and things sometimes get said that shouldn't. Sometimes the soldier gets hurt; sometimes it is the family members. Now go back and inject that first pargraph in after this conversation. That has an effect.

Then your friends leave and God be willing it is just cause they are going home and not leaving the other way. As SFC Smith (MOH winner) wrote "there are only two ways to come home from War. You walk off the plane or you get carried off." But you know you will miss them cause they have become like a new little family for you. But you feel guilty for wanting them to stay; just so you won't have to miss them and be alone. But on the other hand you don't want them to stay one minute longer then they have to. So your lonely, sad, and little happy and resentful cause your not going home all at the same time. That has an effect.

But you wonder will you still be friends when you get back home? Life back home has multitude of distractions; sometimes a friendship needed in a war zone is not needed back home. In some cases you remain friends and in some you do not. So that unkown is there. It has an effect. When the reality is of friendship that disappears when your gone; well that just hurts. Cause losing someone you care about always hurts. That has an effect.

Now lets factor in all the changes your family went through that you were not there to experince with them. So you are returning to people you don't really know. You think you are returning to your memory but you never do. Then throw kids into the whole mix; who change even more drasticly over the time your gone then the adults and you are quickly on the outside looking in. That has an effect.

So it is hard no to be over sensitive as you attempt to try and anticipate it all. Not to mention you finally get to let your guard down and show some emotion. You still have to deal with all the new revelations that you will come home with. That has an effect.

Experiences like War tend to show you alot about what is important in life. Sometimes you get back and realize your whole life you have surrounded yourself with people you don't really need. Sometimes you mix them all up in an effort to make a change. Get rid of some people you did need. That has an effect.

Fear is the enemy and it is always on your mind. You try not to let the expectations get out of had. But it is hard not to after being gone for a year in a place that totally sucks on the good days. Also roll into all of it the let down your gonna feel when home doesn't live up to your expectations cause everybody knows the fantasy is never as good as the real thing. But then sometimes it is better! All that has an effect too.

Now think about having to try and explain to your signaficant other why you were feeling around your bed in the middle of the night looking for your weapon. Or how the sound of one of your children trying to get into bed with you int he middle of the night wakes you so violently from a deep sleep (one of the first you have had in so long that you forgot what deep sleep was) that you move from the prone position into a fighting stance so fast that it scares everyone involved. Not to mention confuses you as to where you are and why your kid is there looking at you like you are monster and your significant other is wondering why you suddenly jumped out of bed throwing the covers all helter sketeler. Or why every so often when you walk around you keep checking for you weapon and you feeling naked cause every time you reach for where it hangs you can't find it. So that makes you feel uncomfortable. That has an effect.

Pile on top of all that crap people who want to see you and all the demands that they will make on you and your time. How they won't understand how what you really want is to be alone and let things slow down. But you won't tell them cause you don't want to hurt their feelings. How do you tell them you just want to have some privacy somthing you have had next to none of while you were away. But at the same time you want them all around cause you miss them all so much. That has an effect.

just so you know what is running through most of our heads right now. Everything effects everything else. In ways you can't even imagine.

11 NOV 05: Rants

Okay so i don't get to watch much TV over here in Iraqi. But I did get to watch a massive waste of my fricking TAX dollars yesterday! I love the blame mentality! I was treated to a few minutes of the farce that we are calling congressional hearings in the house about FEMA. There I just about fell out of my chair when a US representative of multiple terms, MR Sexton asked the most lame question I have ever heard in my life. "why did the military not step in and help out in LA sooner after katrina." Duh little thing written in 1878 written by some smart guys who came up with this thing Called Posse Commitatus. It prevents the military from operating inside the borders of the us without the expressed permission of congress or defens of the homeland. This makes it harder for a charismatic General to come to power and tople the civillian Government. I mean hell the precedent was set by the first president of the US after he kicked Great Britain out of the U.S. He returned a Victory and sent the army home. This allowed the U.S. Civillian governement to operate with out fear of being over thrown by the military.

Okay if you have read the consitution. and I mean all of it. (http://www.usconstitution.net/) If not I recomend you cut past that link into the address spot of you web browser and read the thing. If you have read it then you know that the founding fathers set up a system of limited federal governement. Reason why is so that we did not end up like european countries with a federal governement that was so big it sucked the life out of the country with taxes. With all powers and rights not granted to the fed to be left to the states to decided.

Okay well in 1878 the founders thought up this thing called posse commitatus. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posse_Comitatus_Act) This prevents the federal forces liek the us army from operating in the country specifically states with out the expressed authorization by the constitution or congress. Wow can't believe somebody has been voting for an elected official who does not grasp the concept of the Posse Commitatus.

The current system set up is for the state governor to ask for assistance through FEMA. Congress has delegated its authority to approve the us of federal troops in the U.S. to FEMA. That is fine but responsiblity can not be left up to the military to guess when we step in. That is why we have a civilian lead government and not a military dictatorship. Also I was a little insulted by Mr. Sexton's not so subtle insinuation that people in America can't take care of themselves. Another person pushing the big government and no one is responsible for their own actions.

05 NOV 05: Fights and Farewells

Well last night was the 2nd boxing smoker that was put on here at Camp Victory south. This time I did not do very much. I left it in the hands of SGT Rosado and SSG Marvin. About 10 days prior to the Fight SSG Marvin came by to see me and ask for some help. I gave him a list of things that needed to done and sure enough like the outstanding NCO he was he got it done. So come fight night there were some small hang ups but nothing major.

While were setting up the fights one of my female fighter SPC Jenn Farland took the oppurtunity to say goodbye. If you are wondering she is the red head is some of the boxing pics. She told me she was leaving in 45 minutes and she came to say goodbye to her coach. That was nice. Again it is always nice to see people go home but it is kind of bitter sweet. You can't be upset at them for leaving but yet your are sad because your world just got a little duller, a little worse.

Hope to get some pictures to put with this one.

We actually had different round card girls for this fight. Courtesy of GEN Casey's PSD team. They were absolutely the most professional people we have had in a while.

4 NOV 05: MOH Site

This is a picture of CSM Shortt, myself and COL Hodges on a terrain walk where the most recent Medal of Honor was earned by SFC Paul Smith. An Engineer attached To 3rd Infantry Division. SFC Smith paid the last full measure of devotion for his men. You may have read about him recently. But we are actually standing in the Vicinity of his heroic acts in this Picture. If you have not heard about him thank your local liberal media outlet for failing to remind Americans what a hero really is. Not a fricking celebrity.

any way if you cut and past this link into yor web browser you can read about a man who gave his life for his brothers.

now if you read the citation. I want you to follow this link below and read this speech written by shakespeare. I promis you will have understanding of it like never before.

2 NOV 05: Farewell to CPT karla jean

This is a picture of my friend karla she is a CPT at the Signal that supports the 18th ABN Corps. She is on her way home and to be with her husband who will be returning from the stan.
